Students often ask if they can read a book when they finish their art project, but I do not have books that are at their level. With the Common Core push to require reading in all content areas, students are now seeking to learn about the arts in new and exciting ways.
Our school is a 92% low income school with students from all over the world.
Many students come to our school not speaking any English. Within a few years, students are proficient English speakers, but this does not happen on its own. Students are encouraged to read, be read to, learn vocabulary, and read to peers. The more meaningful contact the students have with quality books, the better readers they become. This is only successful if reading is happening in every discipline, including the arts. I am requesting fictional and information texts at a variety of levels to meet the needs of my growing and eager students.
My Project
Through using these resources, students will strengthen their reading and speaking skills. Students will learn about concepts, themes, techniques, and stories about how artists work. My students need these books to become stronger readers in art. Students will grow in English language acquisition and in comprehension. Finally, they will be able to speak more fluently about their artwork as they develop vocabulary.
These materials are needed so students will be able to grow their vocabulary, learn about art through reading, and develop comprehension skills while improving their English.
They will learn that art requires research as well as engagement in the artistic process, and that being a strong reader is necessary for success in all content areas.
