My Students
“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage." – Roald Dahl
My students come from all over the world.
They bring with them different beliefs and traditions, legends and art, music and food. Although they are anxious to learn English and embrace their new schools and lives, they don't want to, and shouldn't, forget the rich cultures they also bring. And sometimes, they want to read books where they can see themselves in the characters and the settings.
My Project
We all know how important reading is to success in life. I want to create an environment where my students can't wait to curl up with a good book that teaches them something, sparks their imagination and takes them to far away places, introduces them to great characters, or takes them on an adventure. Choice is an important component in student reading. A great classroom library is, therefore, the first step toward developing life-long readers.
My culturally diverse students long to see themselves in their books in order to make connections with characters and settings, storylines, and even conflicts.
This collection of multicultural books not only helps some students see themselves, but allows them to share their culture with others, highlighting our similarities rather than differences. New cultures and places will be discovered, too. Students not only improve in reading, but the classroom climate benefits by making the world a bit smaller!
