My students need non-fiction literature, including biographies and other historical accounts, such as "Extraordinary People of the Civil Rights Movement" and "Presidential Courage," to develop and expand their interests and knowledge of real world issues, stories, events, and people.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students seek to better understand and explore real life issues, topics, and interests that are not readily available in their everyday lives. Nonfiction books will provide them with specialized kinds of knowledge and tool sets to better navigate the tough and complicated world we live in.
My students are eighth graders who are attending their last year in an inner city public middle school in a high poverty neighborhood.
Ninety seven percent of the students receive free lunch, 37% are English Language Learners, and 18% receive special education services. The demographic consists of 80% Hispanic, 15 % Black, and 5% Arab. Our students seek to break the cycle of poverty they live in and push open doors that were not readily available for their parents.
They know first hand how tough life can be without education or financial means. This fuels their desire to succeed against the odds. Their motivation is matched by their potential to be the change makers that we so need in our society. Unfortunately, many of them still face academic challenges and are below grade level in reading, writing, and math. They need all the academic support they can get to thrive and achieve their goals for a better life than the one they know now. They are ready to succeed with our support.
My Project
I am requesting non-fiction books to help expand and increase my students' interests and knowledge of the world around them. The literature ranges from history and historical heroes to science and genius inventors; from varying career choices and professional fields to role model entertainers and athletes; from earth conservation and green life guides to biographies and memoirs of social leaders.
This project will facilitate my students' navigation in this world in leading a successful and meaningful life as they get ready for high school. It will provide them with the real life examples and knowledge that will compel them to change the wrongs in our society and specifically in their community. This nonfiction library will provide them with first rate information with which they can counteract and fight lingering ignorance that is in the way of a better life and future. Please be a positive force in their struggle and a part of the solution to improving the conditions of their lives.
As an eighth grade teacher in a poor neighborhood, I believe my students deserve the best resources that you and I can possibly provide them with.
My students rely on the help and good will of others to share some of our culture's best literary resources. They know that in order to become successful in this world, they must be capable and skilled readers and writers. This project will get us closer by increasing their social awareness, knowledge, and moral obligation to be the best they can be.
