My students need these books to help them grow as readers, and to help expand their minds and to carry them beyond Hudson, FL.

My Students

This year I have a group of gifted student who are reading at a high level. They devour books on a daily basis and I just don't have the books in my classroom, or the series in the media center to keep them going.

My students need access to rich, high level reading materials that will engage them and challenge them as life-long learners.

My school is a Title One school where over 90% of the student population receives either free or reduced lunch rates.

As such the kiddos do not have have access at home to the same amount of books as more affluent children.

Some of the kids don't even have library cards yet, because there is no transportation to the library or both their parents are working during the open hours of the library.

My Project

Becoming good readers is a must for any student. As I stoke the fire of my student's desire for new and exciting books, I am seeing the positive effect it has been having on their learning.

In the past three months I have listened intently as my students' vocabulary has grown, and how they now choose to use words not common when they talk on the playground, but are more common to academia.

It is through the books I offer them in our classroom library that they have really expanded their vocabulary, and they certainly have become much better readers which has helped their grades and will ultimately help them throughout their lives.
