Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We usually take for granted how much literacy is required to navigate our day to day lives. I would like to give my students the opportunity to look deeply into works of literature to enhance both literacy and their understanding of the world.
The students in my class room, all of whom come from impoverished neighborhoods in the inner city, have been through school systems who are either stretched too thin, or lack resources and capacity to get students up to where they need to be.
My 11th graders read at an eighth grade level on average. Many of them have never read an entire book until we began Luis Rodriguez' "Always Running" early this year. We are deep into the book and students are discussing, writing, and soon, conducting a long-term project addressing problems and solutions of gang violence in San Diego.
My Project
McCarthy's "The Road" deals with timely themes of environmental devastation, tracing the journey of a father and son struggling for survival in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian future. Scrounging for food, and battling sickness, marauders, and their own despair, the father and son rely on their love for each other to stay alive. The importance of family to withstand very difficult circumstances is something my students can relate to. Many of them come from broken homes, some with one or both parents living in Mexico. The theme of staying motivated through extreme difficult resonates deeply with them.
Maintaining responsibility for the environment and for others is central to this book and central to our growth as a society.
Many of our students fight for themselves and their family but all too often lack a broader perspective on the world. Through reading and discussion of the novel, students are able to reflect on what is important in life and how people overcome despair. They find home in family, in friends, and, dare I say it, on occasion, in teachers.
