This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our high school students are a cross-section of Baltimore. Baltimore is a city of stark differences: economic stability in certain sections and a redlined area that prevents others from easily accessing opportunity. This is just one of the reasons that our school seeks to empower students with a college preparatory curriculum. We are a school that focuses on ensuring our students graduate with a high school diploma and an associates degree by the time they have completed their high school career. Focusing on deep critical thinking that is aligned with their interests, gives students an opportunity to start ahead and stand solidly. While this does not eradicate structural inequity, it gives all students the knowledge and ability to change it.
All students brilliance should be cultivated.
Students come with their own own set of values, beliefs, skills, and thoughts. It is our job to help them carve out a space in this world. The seminar style environment creates an atmosphere where students can spend time engaging in theoretical knowledge assures a brighter future for all of Baltimore and all of the United States.
My Project
As we're embarking on our food literacy unit, students will use these materials to grow their own plants/food while we read literature with food at its center. Food is more than about eating. It is about stories. It is about access. With your help, as we are reading Tita's (Like Water for Chocolate) and Emoni's (With the Fire on High) stories, we will see how important food and recipes are to the story and ultimately, they will be able to answer the question "how food connects us."
Students will all grow their own vegetables while reading stories and learning about food access and urban farms in the city.
Students will be able to connect with farmers and will be able to participate in not only reading about natural ingredients, but will be able to cultivate their own.
