My students come to school energized and motivated even when dealing with their day-to-day struggles at home and in their communities. As kids, they should not have to deal with the issues they face daily and at their tender ages. They come from struggling backgrounds and also have a variety of disabilities. They struggle with their emotions, social skills, and daily lives. Like all kids, they need love and support. They need encouragement and to be motivated. Given all the issues in their lives, my students are great, loving, and caring students. They look out for each other, and they work hard in the classroom.
As a Title I school with more than 90% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, they already feel as if they are at a disadvantage, especially coupled with their learning disabilities.
They work hard to accept new challenges daily and at completing each task. They are eager to learn, but they need as many learning tools as possible. Given the educational resources, my students will continue to make significant improvements in learning and daily life skills.
My Project
My students fall in love with stories every time we read them, but their experience with the book is often undercut by its scarcity of copies in our school. As of right now, my students have not experienced any books outside of my classroom. They have been amazed and entwined in stories such as Bridge to Terabitha and The Chronicles of Narnia. However, this limits the books that I have in my classroom library. The amount of time that we can devote to analysis and conversation about this incredible work of literature is immeasurable. Especially as I can apply the text to my students and struggles that they are dealing with on a daily basis.
With these copies, students will be able to read The Hobbit this will create class time to develop an enriched novel study for my students to focus on the journey each character takes, the historical context of the novel, and the beautiful symbolism woven into each chapter.
These books allow my special needs students to take amazing adventures that they would otherwise never experience. They get to work toward moving toward more inclusive settings with more complex literature. And more importantly, the diversity and special needs of my students require something special to capture and maintain their attention. Tolkien has all the power in more in this book series.
Thank you for your time and donations. My students will appreciate the ability to grow as readers with these resources.
