Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love to see the excitement on my students' faces as they learn a new fact or read a new word perfectly for the first time. My students need to be exposed to more non-fiction literature as well as good books that can spark their imaginations and let them develop a love for reading.
My students attend a Title 1 school.
Many of the students do not have the support they need at home or come from a home in which English is a 2nd language. They are eager to learn and to develop skills necessary in which they can live a successful and productive life. I have many kids who are struggling with reading and who need to be exposed to the world in a meaningful way. I also have many students who love to read and who need to be given more choices in reading literature so they don't get bored. I also have 2 students with autism. They are both very different but have very special skills. I also have many children with behavioral problems and need a lot of structure in the classroom. Each student I have has unique abilities and talents and each one of them also has a desire to learn.
My Project
My students need 20 magazine subscriptions, 22 bins for leveled books, 3 Big books, J-K leveled books, and 3 book organizers to use during shared reading and centers. I am anxious to be able to use these products in my classroom. They will help me become more organized and provide opportunities for my students to find the books they want to read. Organization is essential in a classroom and I feel that if I have the tools I need, the kids will have easier access to books. The big books will provide a book center for my students during guided reading. They will also provide a way for me to do more shared reading with my kids which, in turn, will promote essential writing activities my students need. During guided reading, I need a place to organize the guided reading books and assignments that I use during this time. The non-fiction books will provide a way for my students to explore the world in which they live and help them develop background knowledge. I will also use these books to help them improve comprehension skills and to learn unique vocabulary words which my ESL students do not learn through everyday conversation.
I think this project will give my students easy access to books and attract each of my different readers.
My special needs students will appreciate the structure and my other students will love to be able to choose different literature on their own reading levels. This will make a difference in my classroom for all of my students because they will be exposed to more choices in literature and provide a way for them to escape into our world and develop their own imaginations.
