This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach ELA to 2 groups of fabulous third graders! They are creative, imaginative and love to read and explore. My students come from a low-income community. More than 75% of them receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch.
My students are always eager to learn and improve every area of reading.
Some of my students can struggle with independent reading. Since all students learn differently, I want to keep them engaged and accelerate what they are reading at all times.
My Project
Working in small groups is a must in my classroom. I am in need of a horseshoe-shaped table so I can work closely and effectively with my students.
As a reading teacher, I find it beneficial to be close to my students when they are working in a small group.
It is hard to meet the needs of a group of students when they are seated in a cluster of desks or just gathered on the floor. I need accessibility to each child so I can hear them read and assist them appropriately.
Having this horseshoe-shaped table puts me at arm's length to each student that comes to the table. They are then more focused and organized with their work. When I work in a special area I tell the kiddos " This is where the magic happens!" I want this table to be a part of this special area.
