First graders are like sponges and absorb everything you teach them. I love how energetic they are when you present new activities to them. Their eyes light up and their smile gets bigger and bigger, and you know you've made a connection.
I hold the future in my classroom.
Future teachers, nurses, doctors, and leaders are in my classroom. Our school is located in the heart of rural Appalachia in South Eastern Kentucky. Many students are in the backpack food program and 100% of our school receive free lunch. Being from a low socioeconomic background and area doesn't stop them from learning; it just takes place a little differently. Working in small groups allows students to work on tasks on their own individual level and be successful.
We all know how important it is for children to learn to read. Reading is the foundation for all subjects. If students aren't successful readers, they struggle with every other aspect of school and life that requires reading. Students also have more confidence when they are able to read fluently and have higher grades in school.
Reading and writing go hand in hand, so it's also important for students to become successful writers as well.
The reading comprehension practice cards, activities, and markers, along with the sight words, language arts, reading and writing activity books will be beneficial in helping students to build on the knowledge they have and learn new skills to increase learning in both areas.
