Mrs. Neat from Hyde Park MA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books on diverse topics, books on cd, and a cd player. These items will help to increase their literacy skills, especially in the area of comprehension.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The typical day in my classroom varies because I have a range of learners in the resource room. I work with students in grades 3- 5, in the area of literacy. We start the day off with a poem or some type of shared reading, then we complete our decoding intervention, or comprehension intervention.
My students represent various nationalities, they have learning disabilities and they are very hardworking.
They all desire to learn how to read and to use these skills. My students work well with partners and they help each other. The students are very encouraging to their peers. My school is a place where learning is the top priority. The teachers work hard to make sure that the students are receiving the instruction that they need to be successful. We have a lot of students who speak English as a second language. It is a school community where we believe that everyone has the ability to discover their gifts and talents beyond the classroom. The students come to school ready to give one hundred percent to their studies.
The students will use the reading materials to gain access to more print in the classroom. They will be able to listen to grade level chapter books even though they are not able to read the text. The students will be able to have book clubs and literature circles with their classmates. These activities will happen during our reading time and the students will gain confidence from listening to the stories on Cd's. The students will be able to increase their comprehension because the pressure of decoding will be lifted from them and they will have to listen. The students fluency will improve because they will be listening to a fluent reader along with the CD's. The students will also be able to have more exposure to literature and different topics, so they will be prepared to participate in different classroom discussions because they will have prior knowledge.
My project will make a difference because some of my students have a fear of reading and they are not confidence in their reading abilities.
They are easily embarrassed in front of their peers who are reading on the 3, 4, and 5 grade level. This project will boost their self-esteem and help them to love books. It will also help me as the teacher to give them a tool, which will unlock the love of literature. It will change the students' lives because they discover a love for reading.
