Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How often do we think about the impact of school budget cuts on students? My school recently lost a dedicated reading teacher, which is one less resource students will have to help them grow as readers. Also, for many of my students, their families cannot afford to buy books.
My students are an exciting, dancing bunch of English language learners who are dedicated to becoming proficient readers and expanding their view of the world.
However, our school is small, and our book library provides access to limited types of books. Our school is a small public performing arts school, and while our small community encourages independent thinking and learning, my students crave on-level texts to help them continue to make progress towards their annual reading goals.
My Project
Nonfiction texts are all around us. From newspapers to magazines, we all read them with ease. However, these texts are often the most difficult for English language learners and below-level readers to master. With that in mind, I am requesting a variety of nonfiction and sports-related books in order to meet my students' needs for nonfiction texts.
The great thing about books is that they will be used again and again.
These texts will find a home in my classroom and will inspire a generation of readers for years to come. Not only are you investing in the reading growth of my current students, you will be making a lasting impact at my school.
