Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This school year has been filled with many changes and exciting lessons. 6th, 7th, and 8th grade are tough, but fun years. My students try their hardest despite their academic and behavioral issues. It is my hope to instill in them the knowledge to get them through their last years in elementary school, as well as to prepare them for high school and beyond. I strive to create a warm, safe, and welcoming learning environment where every student feels successful and loved.
I teach in a low-poverty neighborhood in Chicago.
My students are predominately Hispanic and African American. All of them receive special education services for academics and/or behavior. Although they struggle on a daily basis, they are motivated to do well and strive to work to their highest potential. They are hard working and excited to learn. My 6th, 7th and 8th graders deserve the best education, materials, technology, and books that I can get for them. I want their last years in elementary school to be filled with many academic achievements and great memories.
My Project
I am requesting two sets of classroom novels, Bridge to Terabithia and Freak the Mighty and a bluetooth speaker to help engage my students and improve their reading skills. During our school day we have a period where teachers dedicate time to cover a multitude of skills. During this time I plan to do a bunch of different activities; one of them being a reading club. I decided to choose these novels because of the messages they send and the activities we can do as a class.
I feel that it is important to instill in students that reading is essential to a successful life and even if reading is a struggle, practicing reading is important.
These novels will be used on a daily basis to promote better reading skills, encourage intellectual conversations and enhance my students' imaginations. Please consider donating to this project; you will be touching the lives of my current and future students!
