My current language arts classes consist of 45 students who have a variety of reading interests, reading abilities, reading levels and socioeconomic status. Some of my students are gifted and are devouring books at a rate faster than I can recommend a new one! Other students are struggling to read at an on-grade reading level, and others haven't finished a book all year.
Next year, my classes will consist of a combination regular education students and special education students in 7th grade.
These students will need my encouragement and assistance in finding high quality, high interest, ability level appropriate novels.
My Project
Having access to new, current, appealing novels helps create a love of reading for children! I want to be able to put books into my students hands to help foster a love for, or at least an interest in reading!
Sometimes, finding that one book that you just love is what starts you on the path to becoming a life-long reader!
These titles are picked by fellow students in Illinois as the best, most interesting, most age appealing novels of the year! When students hear that other kids, their age, picked these titles, they are immediately more interested in reading them! They are the most commonly checked out books and having a classroom set would be so beneficial to my students because they will have an immediate copy in their hands instead of getting on a waiting list in the library. Once I book talk a book (I read as many of the titles as I can as well) students are excited to begin reading. I want to capitalize on that excitement and be able to put book in hand as quickly as possible!
