Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Spanish at a small charter school in Downtown LA that is dedicated to helping low-income and immigrant families. Given that our community lacks so many resources, the opportunity to provide our students with great books is vital.
In particular, for my classroom, access to books in Spanish helps to close the reading gap for those who may still struggle to read in English, and therefore don't have as many reading opportunities in their other classrooms.
Lastly, given that so many of my students identify as Latinx, showing them the vibrant culture of many of their homelands is a beautiful privilege that I am so lucky to have. Help me give these opportunities to my students!
My Project
In this Spanish 1 unit, students will delve into the lives of famous sports personalities, Felipe Alou and Lionel Messi.
For many of my students, reading is a chore - but once I link it to sports, they are hooked!
This unit is one of my tricks for moving beyond the preconceived notion that my students have of reading, and linking into their personal interests to show them that literacy can be fun. With these already well-known figures, students get excited before we even delve in and are given a strong example of reading for enjoyment.
As always, reading in our Spanish classroom is an act of defiance and equity. While teaching my students to enjoy reading as well as find a purpose in it, reading in Spanish for my heritage and native speakers means celebrating a culture that they frequently see denigrated in the media, and often, access to reading that they may not have in any other class due to language barriers. Please help me give my students the education they deserve!
