Reading Skill-Building Games for Social and Active Learning!
My students need active learning to support their reading development. Language and reading games foster social skills in a fun atmosphere that encourages reading skill building.
LS kindergarteners and first grade students are poised at the beginning of their journey—to learn about themselves and classmates as students.
We are a small school serving a diverse population from all over Seattle (and beyond).
Donations help us get primary-specific materials beyond the basics—those more expensive items that enable us to connect deeper with learning or extend projects to tie a thread through multiple subjects.
Thank you for helping students in their formative years; the donations made to our primary school classroom ensure that young learners cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a fun and immersive environment. And the value of these experiences is far reaching; Such well-prepared students continually use these skills until they end their journeys as scholars and young adults.
My Project
This project contains several games that are enjoyable small-group activities for active 1st grade students. While I work with a small group of 4-5 students, the remainder of the class will use their wait time to build vocabulary with the word families dice and wipe off game with word bank. Students can build phonics and sight words from the Can Do! sets.
Mastery of phonological awareness, phonics, and sight words are critical for primary school students to be fluent readers.
Using games in a small group setting builds age-appropriate reading skills in a social setting that engages first grade students, reinforcing academic skills from teacher-led reading groups. They will look forward to the work when it happens alongside friends!
Students will use these games in a four day rotation, they will be put to use right away and throughout the year, as we have a wide-range of reading abilities among students.
