My students walk in every day ready to learn. They are full of energy and thirsty for knowledge. I work with 55 sixth, seventh and eighth graders. No matter what the challenges of their day are they are willing to step up to any challenge.
My school is a Title I school with about half of the population receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
My students come from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds and have a variety of different needs. Many of my students are reluctant readers and reading below grade level.
My Project
Having students read nonfiction text can sometimes be overwhelming with difficult vocabulary and concepts. As the reading teacher, I want to make certain reading is fun and enjoyable. The picture books for this project will be used to model fluent reading and think alouds. The multiple copies of texts will be used to provide the students with choice for book clubs.
These books about inventors and inventions will be used to immerse my 6th, 7th, and 8th grade readers in interesting nonfiction text.
The students will be participating in activities to share the new information they learn about inventors and inventions. Other activities the students will participate in include analyzing the structure of nonfiction text and biographies.
