My advanced language class is full of students who are fluent Spanish because it is their mother tongue. They can gossip and ask for V-bucks and order tamales at the restaurant and even text love messages all in Spanish. However, they haven't written it or read it.
Together, we write stories and essays.
Together, we read everything from nursery rhymes, songs, and short stories . . . all the way to Borges, Márquez, Poniatowska, and Cervantes. We need más libros!
My students are native Spanish speakers taking an academic Spanish class for the first time. They know how to speak and gossip in Spanish, but they need to learn to write and read academically.
This will be the first time they read a novel in class!
Our textbook room selections tend to be focused on AP and advanced readers, but my students aren't there, yet!
The novel I am requesting is smaller and simpler and in Spanish! What's more, the novel describes a mixed family struggling to survive and live together, so beyond the raw Spanish vocabulary and grammar and syntax, the novel will offer fodder for inspirational discussions. (in Spanish!)
