My Students

My students are between two and four years behind grade level in reading. Guided reading and library are two of the most important times in the day for my students so I can work to catch them up with their peers and put them on a different life path.

I teach a fourth, fifth, sixth combined special education class.

My students are all incredibly bright but need different kinds of instruction to meet their academic goals. They attend a school that is in dire need of resources, books, technology, etc. In spite of those obstacles, my students last year averaged over two years of reading growth, and I expect to meet that goal again this year.

My Project

Every day we "shoot for two years of reading growth and the moon." I get my kids excited about reading every day by focusing each lesson around our goal of two years of reading growth. During guided reading we sit at our desks, which is incredibly hard for students who can't see the story. My students also have nowhere to sit during their silent library time. My hope is that a rug will excite my students even more about reading and make our library a more inviting place to read.

Each day I wake up working to close the achievement gap, but more specifically, the literacy gap that exists in my classroom.

I know that a rug will make my classroom library a more complete and inspiring place to learn how to read for so many of my students. Thank you for your consideration and support.
