Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students come from very low-income homes, so any kind of project in school is entirely funded by the teachers, or by generous donations from community members. Our school is Title 1, with an 85% free and reduced-price lunch program. There are many active gangs in the area, and many of our families are in homes affected by drug use or gang membership.
These kids are so grateful for everything they are given.
They are kind, compassionate, and love to be praised. They deserve to have the experiences that other kids get in higher income areas, and it will not be wasted on them.
My Project
During our daily routine, students get to choose a place in the room to read for our Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) time. They love being able to read wherever they want, and have asked multiple times for us to get some more fun seating options for when they get this time.
We have been building a love of reading in even the most reluctant readers this year.
We pick out books together, and students have partners that they read with at various times during the week. They love that they can choose their own seat, but the floor in our classroom is not the softest. With these seats, they will be able to sit wherever they want without getting sore.
