My students need 5 mp3 players, storage drawers, & storage containers to improve reading comprehension and fluency through 5 reading rotation work stations.
One of my favorite quotes is from Dr. Seuss: "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." The goal of my project is to increase students' reading fluency and comprehension so they will be able to be successful life long learners.
Our K-2 elementary school is in a rural farming community.
We have a population of 303 students. Of these students, 42.72% qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. I teach 2nd grade and have 21 students. My young students are eager to learn, energetic, and caring. I try to provide them with a large variety of academic experiences to keep them motivated and excited about learning. 1/3 of my students do not have access to a computer in their home and one goal I have is to provide them with a variety of technology experiences. I want my students to be kind, productive members of our community. We have daily discussions about our actions and our life long goal of making the world a better place. I want to provide my students with skills that are not only meaningful to them in the classroom, but that are also meaningful in their personal lives outside of school.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will be used in a 5 day reading rotation. A small set group of students will go to one reading station per day. There will be 5 different reading stations for 5 set groups of students. At each station will be different materials for listening to reading, reading to others, word work , and writing. The materials at each station will provide students with reading, writing, and language skill practice. My goal for my students is to increase their reading fluency and comprehension skills while exposing them to various forms of technology to aide them in these skills. In addition to the traditional reading station materials (books, writing prompts, skill games), students will have access to I-pads, mp3 players, and laptop computers. Having students going to one specific reading station where all materials are organized in one place will cut down on time wasted browsing through a large variety of materials housed in various places round the classroom.
The donations I am requesting will improve the amount of quality time spent on reading skills by having materials housed in set locations.
I believe the students will be motivated to use the mp3 players to listen to books. Since technology plays a critical role in our daily lives, students will be making real world connections between what they are learning at school to what is meaningful in their personal lives. Reading & technology are essential for students' success in today's world.
