My students are incredible! This group of young women has been dedicating their lunch once a week to talk about books for 2+ years now.
These students work hard to be successful every day.
Book Club started when a group of 8th graders was struggling to find books they enjoyed and agreed to have lunch with me weekly to talk about a book we were all reading. After all of 8th grade and 9th grade we have 3 students still dedicating lunch to talk books. Book Club is about so much more than the books but their dedication to our group shows their incredible character.
My Project
Our group of students work hard to be successful even though reading is something they naturally enjoy. These young women give up lunch once a week to discuss a book when school was in session. The average text takes about 10 weeks to complete. This has, of course, changed with school being out, they now have more time so we are flying through books at an unexpected rate.
These young women come to Book Club for the community and to help themselves be successful students.
They may not love reading but they do want to do well and enjoy the high-interest books that have been selected. They share that reading is "so bad" when we are doing it together. We started the book Rules for Disappearing prior to our school closure, we would love to deliver the second book, The Rules for Breaking, to our students' porches/mailboxes to inspire them to keep reading. The book Tell Me Three Things would be a wonderful book for our eventual return, or to make a second delivery, depending on how long we are not in our school building. We would love to keep cultivating the community we created and book deliveries would be a great way to do this.
