"The ten best ways to get better at reading are to read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read," I tell my students everyday. The challenge for my students is that they need to build the necessary skills to be able to be successful readers. All my students want to learn how to read!!
The students at my school are AWESOME!
We have a very diverse population with many English Language Learners. They come from homes and family situations that make learning difficult and challenging but they all WANT TO LEARN! Our school has created a safe haven for them with caring, qualified teachers who do amazing things with the students academically and emotionally. The growth that our students make, regardless of their circumstances, is stellar! Our teachers have a strong sense of commitment, determination, dedication and pride in our students and school. We work together to do what's best for every single student in our building, regardless if they are in our classroom or not. We are a united force! With all the budget cuts, it has been difficult for teachers to purchase needed materials to help our students be successful. We try to reach out to the community and involve families in their child's learning and school experience.
My Project
Reading is all encompassing and touches ALL subject areas. Without a solid foundation of basic reading skills, all other subject areas are affected. Without being a reader a student's academics and self esteem suffer enormously! Reading is a critical life long skill affecting every aspect of life, whether reading for enjoyment or a job. We have an overwhelming number of students who struggle in reading and need direct, targeted instruction in specific skills to become successful readers. The materials I am requesting are phonics based (building blocks for reading) and will build student skills in reading. The Take Home 2nd Grade Literacy Games will involve/include families and caregivers with their child's learning in a FUN way and be a connection to school and what their child is learning, a critical component that is often times missing.
Donations to this project will not only support our students this year, but also for years to come.
I want our students to have every opportunity at school to learn the skills they need to be a READER! Without being able to read, school is a scary place to be and leads to student behavior issues, academic failure and higher drop out rates. This project will have an enormous impact on my students and their success in school and life!
