I am a First Grade teacher in a low income, high poverty school district, where 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Our school serves over 200 First and Second Grade students every day. Our staff continues to create a safe atmosphere of acceptance and love for our students. We meet each child where they are while fostering a lifelong love of learning. For many of our students, school is the only place they feel safe, accepted and loved.
My students need a CD and cassette player to listen to stories read by various readers. Listening to others read is great way to build reading skills and fluency. I have chosen level 1 and level 2 books that students can use to increase vocabulary, identify patterns in words, and build strong fluent readers. Each set of books has 6 different stories. Reading is the foundation of education. I believe teaching a student to read is the greatest achievement we can give them. If we can teach them to read, we can teach them to be anything they want to be!
