Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope" - Kofi Annan My students desperately need reading interventions to put them on grade level. With these iPads, they will be able to use intervention programs during independent center time. Reading should be a celebration, not misery. Give them hope!

My students live in one of the most impoverished communities in Washington, DC.

Their housing projects are dilapidated, windows are barred, and housing numbers are spray painted on the walls. However, my students walk in our school building smiling every day. They are excited to learn and grow. They find great joy in the simplest tasks and always want to do better. They are the most deserving children and are grateful for anything they are given.

My Project

My students will use these iPads during literacy centers. My school uses and intervention program called Lexia, which is an independent center that teaches them at their reading level, not their grade level. This means that my fourth grade students that are reading on a kindergarten grade level will be given rigorous work that actually suits them, instead of fourth grade work that will frustrate them. It is an amazing program that has shown incredible results!

To read is to succeed.

Too many of my students struggle with reading and are at a disadvantage because of that. With these iPads, they will be taught at their level, they will not be frustrated by work that is over their heads. My students face hardship, strife, and failure at home every day. They should not face those things in my classroom. With this project, they will be given the tools they need to be better readers so that they can succeed.
