Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Abraham Lincoln once said, "The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who'll get me a book I ain't read." Like President Lincoln, my students are eager to read books yet we do not have enough copies for them to read.
Students in my classroom come from one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in the L.A.
County area, yet they are very resilient and eager to learn. The school tries to provide students with as many materials as possible; however, there are too many students in each class. These same students come to school every day wanting to know more. They engage with each other and communicate the many obstacles they have in their communities. Some of them stay an extra three hours after school to complete class assignments or to wait for their parents.
My Project
My students need 33 copies each of the novels Esperanza Rising and Number the Stars, 33 subscriptions to Scholastic News magazine, and a MacBook for access to educational content. With your donation, my students will be able to have enough copies of books to form Literature circles. They will be able to help each other understand and talk about the same text and make sense of it. They will also be able to take their own copies of books home and prepare to have conversations through Reciprocal Teaching. Having enough copies of books will also help students take ownership of their learning and help them feel comfortable expressing their ideas and opinions in open dialogue. Your donation will also help students create presentations through the use of technology such as Power Points about the novels they are reading.
Classroom libraries play a vital role in ensuring that children develop strong literacy skills, especially in fifth grade.
Unfortunately, our school does not have the resources to provide various books for children. With your help, my students will have enough books to read as a class and be able to take their own copies home. They will also be able to have access to a technology device that they can use for their educational needs.
