My Students

Our library is the central learning station of our school where students with ties from all over the world come together as one to learn and explore. The student population comes from many countries and continents, and over thirty languages are spoken and shared. As a Title I school, we also struggle with the real problem of children in poverty, and we try to do our very best to meet all of their needs for the hours we get to share with them each day.

Even though our population is diverse, they are all just kids, and they all deserve the same opportunities for learning and growing.

I am lucky enough to teach every student in our school. They are an amazing group of students, eager to learn, create, and explore their world through as many opportunities as I can provide.

My Project

Reading is powerful. No one can deny that. Reading helps us learn independently, explore our passions, and understand the world around us. It can help us unwind after a taxing day. It is an essential skill, but for some, it can still be daunting.

Instilling a passion for reading is one of my biggest goals each year as an elementary school librarian!

This year, we will be reading Bluestem (K-3rd) and Monarch (3rd-5th grade) nominated books for our state's awards. There are 20 books in each category, and students across the state read & vote for their favorite. In the spring, the winners will be revealed for the entire state! Some of these books will be read in the library over the next several months. I'd love to encourage students to read even more of these books independently & share their feedback.

That's where this project comes in! First of all, several books we do not currently have but are nominated this year are a part of this project. After all, we want to read ALL of them! As a reward for participating in this reading challenge, we will have a popcorn party in the spring for all of our students, and students who go above and beyond by reading more books and writing book reports will have the opportunity to receive additional prizes. Things such as glow sticks, emoji keychains, and squishees will be distributed to students who go the extra mile to complete book reports and read more independently. Can you help me make reading exciting, fun, and rewarding for even our most reluctant readers? I would love to see our kids running for a book instead of technology or video games when given the chance, and you can be a part of that excitement!
