In fifth grade my students are beginning to be truly independent and take on more responsibility for themselves and ownership of their work. By the end of the school year I would like the classroom to be so independent that it could run itself!
I have an incredible class of twenty-eight students in Chicago.
They are like little sponges and they love to learn. My students enjoy working together in groups or on their own if they choose. They are a dynamic group of students and we all have fun learning in my classroom. It is a diverse group with reading and math abilities that range from 3rd-7th grade. My school is a pre-K through 8th grade school in the city with devoted educators and administration.
My Project
This year we will be reading a classroom novel together called Because of Mr. Terupt. The novel is about a group fifth graders with different perspectives in a classroom throughout the school year. My students share similar issues and experiences with the characters and they really connect to the novel! Completing a classroom set of books is important so each student may read the novel. By practicing the reading process together as a class, it will create better independent readers.
Not only will we be reading novels, we will also be reading about interesting science topics using Super Science Magazine!
Students will have a subscription to a science magazine that will capture the excitement of science in the classroom! Each student will receive a magazine each month filled with interesting articles about all different science topics such as engineering, earth science and life science. Each set of magazines includes teacher and student resources, a poster, experiments and videos. Students will love learning about all different types of science!
Also, an Echo with Alexa will be helpful in all subject areas including classroom organization and management. Some examples of how an Echo is used in the classroom include pairing students, listening to novels read aloud, spelling, finding synonyms, doing research for science or social studies and of course playing music an even games! Voice technology is here to stay and it will be helpful to the students to know its capacity and to use it as a teaching and learning tool in the classroom.
