Reading Rocks (and Minerals Too!)

My students need well written text and engaging hands-on materials for STEAM experiments as we study rocks and minerals.

My Students

Our classroom is a place of challenge and discovery! While we live in the most impoverished county in California, our dreams and determination to achieve a brighter future are undimmed. Our little town is both friendly and remarkably beautiful; however, many families struggle financially. As a very small, rural, Title I school, all of our students participate in both the free lunch and free breakfast programs. The wonderful first to fifth grade students who visit my Reading Intervention classroom work diligently to sharpen their reading and writing skills. They eagerly strive to move forward in their academic careers.

My Project

Did you ever stop to pick up pretty rocks as a child? My students often admire the rocks they find on the playground and want to know their names, where they have come from, and which minerals they contain. Your donation will allow us to connect reading with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) projects as we study the metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous processes of the rock cycle.

Imagine a room filled with happy children actively engaged in hands-on learning projects!

As we discuss the central question of "What are rocks and where did they come from?" students will read non-fiction books such as "Everything Rocks and Minerals" and “National Geographic Readers: Rocks and Minerals”. Next, students will grow and dig for crystals, open geodes, and sort collections of rocks into their scientific classifications. These hands-on STEAM experiments promote collaboration and imagination in the classroom. Then, the students will again collaborate to measure our school garden and paint river rocks to line the pathways. Finally, the students will split into research teams and create Google Slide presentations on their favorite type of rock or mineral. These presentations and our painted river rocks will be shared with members of their regular classrooms during a special end of unit party. These presentations build the Reading Intervention students' self esteem and confidence in their reading and writing skills.

Won't you please consider supporting our project and allowing my students to build their knowledge of and relationship with the natural world around them as they sharpen their reading skills? It is because of donations from generous contributors that unique projects like ours are made possible in small, rural schools. We simply couldn't afford to obtain these materials without your help and it is truly appreciated. Thank you for considering us.
