My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some of them enter my room with the world at their fingertips, while others have very little knowledge about the world around them. They come from a variety of different social and economic statuses and bring a variety of hardships to our classroom on a daily basis. Meeting each and every physical, emotional, and educational need is very important to their educational success.
When they enter my room my goal is for them to know first and foremost that they are loved and wanted.
My second goal is for them to be given the tools they need to succeed, not only in the classroom but in life as well. I want them to be able to walk out of my room everyday knowing more when they leave than when they entered. They are a great group of students that are just looking for someone to take their hand and lead them to new heights.
My Project
Before NASA could launch their first rocket into space it took years of planning and prep work. The rocket had to be thoughtfully planned out, built, and tested several times before it could actually take flight. A successful reader, like a rocket, has to spend years preparing and learning how to read before they are ready to independently take flight on their own. Reading is the key to success; however, it is not something that comes naturally. It must be taught. In order for students to learn to read and be successful they must be exposed to a multitude of high quality literature. Students have to see reading modeled, practice reading, and be taught skills and strategies to help them become successful readers.
My kindergarten students need a space and the equipment necessary to see reading modeled, so they can one day take flight on their own.
The floor table will give my students a comfortable space to work. This table will be where our listening station will be located. The listening center comes with headphones and a CD player that will allow my students to listen along to books they love. My students already use digital books to gain exposure to print; however, they need to be able to turn the pages of the books and track the print to gain an understanding of how print works. The read along set will provide books and CDs for my class to use as at the listening station that allow them to follow along using high-quality literature. This will allow my students to hear reading modeled and give them the tools they need to take flight in reading!
