This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are creative, intelligent, analytical thinkers. They come to school every day interested in learning and exploring. My students enjoy reading novels and are excited to step into a new world through books. I love sharing my joy of reading with my students.
One of the greatest joys is seeing my students' excitement when we read and discuss a book.
My students attend a hidden gem in Philadelphia. Exciting novels to add to our classroom would ignite that excitement in my students.
My Project
I am requesting the historical fiction novel Riot by Walter Dean Myers to read with my students. This will be incorporated into a unit of study on the Civil War and its impact on America. Riot takes place in New York City during the Civil War. The main character is the daughter of an African American father and an Irish mother.
The donation of this novel will help students understand the impact of the Civil War.
Students will learn how the War Between the States redefined America. They will also look at identity, and what it means to have an identity in America.
