Our school is located in a rural area in the heart of west central Minnesota. Our school district serves approximately ten small communities in the area. My students are incredible kids- they are bright and active learners who enjoy activities that keep them engaged! We make and learn about music every day, and each grade level puts on two performances each year for families, friends, and community members. They enjoy the opportunity to perform and share their music with others!
My Project
In our music classroom, we will be using a supplemental curriculum called “Kidstix” to practice reading and playing rhythm patterns as a group. This exciting curriculum allows for students to have their very own “stick station,” which allows them to stay actively engaged for the entire lesson!
Each stick station contains a pair of drumsticks, a tambourine, a plastic cutting board (or “beat board”), and a metal can (or "Crash Can").
The metal cans are washed and recycled from the school cafeteria, and the opening is wrapped with duct tape to ensure student safety! The closed end serves as a drum and is covered with craft foam, which allows it to dampen the sound from the drumstick. The open end allows for storage of the beat board, tambourine, and drumsticks.
We have acquired the cans and drumsticks needed for our “stick stations,” but we need small tambourines to help complete them! We are also requesting the craft foam to dampen the sound on the "Crash Can." Finally, we are requesting the duct tape to safely wrap our "Crash Cans."
I would like to build two class sets of "stick stations," as I travel between two buildings and would love to have a set at each school! Our students will love "Kidstix"- it is engaging and hands-on, and it provides a fun and exciting way to practice rhythm reading!
