This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss wrote these words in 1978, but their truth remains three decades later. To read is to be empowered.
The students in our class are 3-5 years old.
Our classroom is blended, meaning that 1/2 of my students have delays in one or more areas of development. Our school is located in the oldest, largest, and poorest housing development in our city. For many of our students, this means that there are few reading materials to use when they get home each day or to read over the weekend/school breaks. And for some of our students, this also means that there are few adults in their lives who possess the skills or the time to be able to read with them each night. But these factors do not lessen the interest and excitement my students have for reading. The spark is there and the possibilities are limitless. It is my duty as their teacher to continually provide activities and resources to fuel the fire and encourage their love of reading.
My Project
Can you remember how excited you were about life when you were 3, 4, or 5 years old? The students in our class come to school each day bouncing in excitement and ready to jump in to what we have planned for the day. They notice immediately when a new book is put out in the classroom. And they immediately begin asking questions. When will we read it? What's on the cover? Who is the author?
In March, our school will take part in our city's annual Read Me Week. This week is focused on the joy of reading and is tied to Dr. Seuss' birthday. Our learning activities, read-alouds, and classroom focus will be based upon the works of Dr. Seuss. While we currently have a few titles in our classroom library, there are many amazing books we are missing. Having these books, games, materials, and resources will help us to make our Read Me Week as engaging and exciting as we can possibly make it. And in the process, it is our hope that our student's love of reading will grow even stronger.
The Dr. Seuss books, games, and materials in this project will allow us to make this year's Read Me Week awesome for our kids!
But more importantly, it will allow our kids to really experience how powerful books and reading can be when you jump in to them head first. And just imagine the possibilities in store for them if they can realize this at 3, 4, or 5 years of age!
