My students live in a small rural community, whether it is in town, in the country, or near the coast. Many are from low-income homes and the majority do not have parents who have furthered their education beyond high school. I do all I can to encourage them to get the best education possible in order for them to be prepared either to go to college or for a career, and reading is paramount-they must become skilled readers and thinkers if they want to be able to pursue their dreams.
A wonderful thing has happened this year-a reading revolution has exploded and I can not keep enough books on my shelves!
Much loved books are becoming tattered and I am constantly getting requests for new books. They are actually googling authors to see if there are more books in a series or just to see what other books the author has written. They covet their DEAR time, and they are not happy if something takes away from it. They love to read!
My Project
Books! Books! And more books! That's what my students are begging for! My ninth and tenth grade students have become enthralled with reading, and because of this, they are devouring my in-class library books at a rapid pace. Popular books are becoming tattered and need to be replaced. Series books are literally flying off the shelves. They want an updated library with different genres to choose from and more books from their favorite authors: Gary Paulsen, Watt Key, Alan Gratz, John Green, Gayle Forman, RL Stine, Rick Riordan, Michael Grant, Stephanie Garber, Victoria Aveyard, and Cassandra Clare, plus many more.
Students are pressuring their friends to hurry up and finish, so they can be the next to check out the book.
Often times, books don't make it back to the shelf-instead they are passed off to the next person who has patiently waited "in line" to read it.
This reading relationship started last year with our Rebel Readers' library and has continued this year with my returning students and spread contagiously to this year's freshman class. I don't have to "sell" books any more-my students are doing it without realizing it! To hear students who were alliterate non-readers last year, do an impromptu "book talk" through the class library, while recommending books to their friends is more than I ever dreamed possible. This is one revolution that is changing the culture at our school, and I never want to see it end!
