My students need copies of "The Giver", "The House of the Scorpion", and "The Outliers" to successfully master the new Common Core Georgia Performance Reading Standards.
Do you remember the first time you read a book you didn't want to put down? I believe that my students will have exactly the same reaction when reading classics like "The Giver," "The Scorpion House," et cetera. I want to expose my students to a plethora of memorable literary works from every genre.
My students and I live in a beautiful, historic city in picturesque Georgia.
We are surrounded by a rich cultural history paved with the cobblestones of years past. Our school is located in the very heart of the historic district. My students have developed my passions for the written word. New books are "snatched" off the many classroom bookshelves before my initials can begin to dry on the covers. It is almost impossible to keep up with their insatiable reading appetite. It is my desire to fill every inch of my classroom with books from every genre known to man. I'm honored to introduce my students to some of the world's greatest literary works. Books come and go, but some remain forever ingrained in our minds. I want diverse literature circles which require class sets. I want books my students relate to. These books will forever be embedded in their hearts, their minds, and the depths of their very soul. Additionally, I want to develop a reading program that's rigorous - yet fun!
My Project
My students need sets of "The Giver," "The House of the Scorpion," and "Outliers - A Success Story." The aforementioned text will provide the reading rigor required. My classroom is warm and inviting with the aroma of scented candles inviting all who pass my door to come in and read. Students are encouraged to relax. They can sit in their desk, a comfortable "butterfly" chair, one of several bean bags, or anywhere their heart desires. A desk isn't required to obtain knowledge. Adding comfort to our learning environment is important. In addition, these resources will allow me to teach at the rigor required by the new Common Core Standards. In addition, increased exposure to complex texts will provoke my students to think critically while increasing their vocabulary development and skills, comprehension, foster creativity and creative writing. They will also allow me the opportunity to increase student achievement by designing lessons that correspond with the selected literature.
This project is critical to the success of my students as we work to increase the rigor in our reading programs.
An environment rich with literature is vital to our future. Children tend to read more when books are readily available. Growing my classroom library guarantees my students success in all of their academic subjects. Studies show that students who read frequently excel in all subjects. Building comprehension skills, provides a critical foundation for success in school and life.
