Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of my third grade students come from low income single parent homes. Unfortunately, many of the parents are uneducated and not able to help their children develop reading skills. On the first day of school, more than 90% of the students that entered my classroom were not reading at a third grade level. These students are hard working and goal oriented, they just need reading materials that will help them to develop the reading skills they need in order to achieve their academic goals.
My students are part of a T.E.A.M.
because we believe that Together Everyone Achieves Mastery. At the end of the year, my third graders must pass an online state test in order to go to fourth grade. These students struggle with using technology. Technology integration is crucial for academic achievement. I know that by incorporating technology into our daily lessons we will reach our goals, and become third grade readers.
My Project
Technology is a powerful tool that helps increase student achievement. In reading, students will use Amazon Fire tablets to conduct research and build background knowledge. They will use websites like Newsela to read about current events. All students will be able to read books at their lexile level using MyON.com. Students will use the tablets to learn more information when conducting research about insects and arachnids. Students will use a variety of books, that include The Buzz on Insects by Gina Shaw and National Geographic Readers: Caterpillar to Butterfly by Laura Marsh, gather facts and information about insects that they will teach their classmates about.
Having Amazon tablets available in the classroom allows us to fully integrate technology into our day.
It becomes a tool we can use continually (and authentically), rather than a time block in our day. In the end, this give students the opportunity to drive their own learning, and will also give them the time they need to become technologically literate: both as consumers of technology and as creators.
