Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an accelerated kindergarten class in a Title 1 K-4 building in Houston, TX. I integrate learning stations in my classroom that the children rotate through during reading group time. I NEED HELP WITH MY READING STATION!
All I have is a carpet and a few pillows to sit on which makes for a station that is uncomfortable and hard to stay focused in. My children love to read, but with so few materials to "relax on," they start talking and disrupting the other children in the class. I would like to have a child size couch, 2 rocking chairs, some large pillows, a few lamps for softer lighting and batteries. I would also like to have a storage unit to hold all my books. Due to a lack of materials to fill the space, it is not convenient for the children to put a book away and get another one without bothering another child. If I had more materials to create a bigger area for the reading station, these problems would decrease.
The children rotate to various stations throughout our reading time, thus the reading area gets used at least 3 times a day. My children love to read and to learn new skills to become even better readers. This includes time for them to sit independently and develop their individual skills. I feel that a larger, more comfortable station would give them the opportunity to build their skills and open their eyes to bigger and better stories.
