I am a third grade teacher in an Equity + school in Winston-Salem, NC. Currently, 81% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. In my own classroom, 95% of the students are on free lunch, five are English as a Second Language students and three are receiving Special Education services. Third grade is a transition year in many ways, and many parents at my school are uncertain about the best way to help their children at home. Parents frequently call me to request materials to work with their children at home. Unfortunately, I do not have adequate resources to fulfill this request. The reading reflection journals allow me to send home a variety of reading activities allowing the children to continue their education at home and share what they've learned with their families. These journals also provide a unique opportunity for families to work together with their children, allowing for the family to provide support and encourage their children to continue working and learning at school. The journals can be used at home and at school to help the children reflect on their reading and improve their comprehension. I believe having take-home reading journals will truly benefit my class and help to open the lines of communication between home and school. Thank you for your time and consideration of my proposal.
