My students need 25 new release books written especially for boys or girls to encourage reluctant readers to fall in love with the stories and characters.
Many 5th graders have not yet discovered books that capture their imagination. I teach 25 energetic, happy children and with the addition of these new releases, this year they will fall in love with reading.
My students are 10-11 year olds that attend a coastal intermediate school.
They are active and come from diverse backgrounds with varying experiences. Some already love to read, while others have not discovered that books offer a wonderful escape into their imaginations.
My Project
These 25 new release books will offer new exciting landscapes and characters for the students to explore. I chose some new book series because from experience I know that 5th graders always want to know what will happen next and with a series, they discuss characters and happenings as if they were actually happening in their world. I want them to become hooked on a series or a subject enough to ask for extra silent reading time. My students will recommend books to each other and discuss what they like about the book, characters and what is happening in the story. They will respond to their favorite books by writing poems, raps, songs, etc. and sharing with the class. Reading is the basic building block for school success and I want all of my students to become avid readers.
If this project is funded, you will be helping my students this year, and in the future.
If a child becomes an avid reader, he will become more successful in school and will develop understandings and knowledge of things beyond his experiences. This is a very important gift that you can give a child. Reading expands the world of the reader and can help them develop lifelong goals that they would never have even imagined without inspiring books and characters. New books excite young readers!
