Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a charter school in the city of Camden, NJ. Our school is comprised of four campuses that serve about 1,500 students. I teach K-3 students which is a group of roughly 500 students. My kids are eager learners and curious about learning Spanish. They love to learn through songs and art projects. Luckily, our school dedicates time to world language learning and the benefits of language learning.
My school has a a variety of Spanish speaking students from novice to advanced.
Students love to learn through song and role playing at the younger levels which encourages full engagement. My kids love to play games that involve vocabulary and relish in performing to show off their Spanish language skills.
Students in my district are fortunate to have exposure to a second language from the moment they enter our Pre-K program until they graduate High School. It is not always easy to build a love of foreign language but my kids try their hardest and we have fun doing it!
My Project
My students use Magic Treehouse Books in their ELA learning and being able to support their reading in Spanish with the same books will help in a multitude of ways. Being able to read and listen to the same stories in Spanish will help students be more interested in learning Spanish as well as improving comprehension in both English and Spanish.
Every year we have a Read Across America event where guest readers visit and read to our students.
Having the Dr. Seuss books to read to the students in Spanish would be a great way for them to be exposed to a familiar story in Spanish.
Reading is an essential part of learning and unfortunately some of our students do not have enough exposure and experience with reading at home. It would be an amazing experience for my kids to have more exposure and especially in Spanish!
