Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has been struggling to keep teachers. Changing to new standards and other economic pressures have had an impact on this community and, by extension, my students. My students are curious, rambunctious, and earnest.
They are mostly low income students in a predominately rural Hispanic community.
All students receive free lunches at our school. Many student have family members who used to be incarcerated at the now closed private prison. We have many At Risk student and many students's reading level is well below 7th grade, some as far behind at 5 grades.
My Project
I am asking for a grade eight leveled library of books. Having a classroom library of age-appropriate books in a variety of reading levels will empower my students to try new books. These selections are specifically designed to be interest appropriate for 8th graders with a variety of reading levels. These are a collection of books set up by the vendor. I will be using them as a library starter for middle school students. Books they may not have considered before because we have limited time in the library. Some of my highest reading level students and some of my lowest reading level students struggle to find appropriate books for themselves.
With your contribution, my students will have freedom to choose a book of interest in a no pressure environment.
There were no literature books or novels for the 8th graders when I took over this position. Independent reading hadn't been as large a part of the curriculum for these students in the past. Our school library, is as great as it is and we already have some reading nooks in the works. This collection would put a nice shine on the whole idea. Please consider my kids when you are browsing through projects. They really do deserve better than they have right now.
