My students need leveled reading sets to reinforce reading with more complex texts.

In the words of Dr. Seuss, "The more you read, the more you'll know!", "The more you know, the more you'll grow!" This is the sentiment that I would like for all my first graders to have about reading! I believe this can only be accomplished by addressing my students' individual needs and development. Although the dynamics of the classroom are ever-changing, one thing that remains constant is the importance of providing a literacy-rich environment that reaches all readers at their level.
Being that I service children within an urban school district in the Atlanta-metro area who qualify for one hundred percent free or reduced price lunch; subsequently, I hear too often, "Mrs. L., I don't have books at home," or "My mom can't afford to buy me books." In light of this, I put forth my greatest efforts to supplement this need in my classroom.
Everyday students engage in independent reading and guided reading to not just build their reading skills, but to instill the love of reading. Having more class sets of leveled reading materials/activities would allow my students to be successful in choosing materials they feel confident reading on their own.
The leveled book sets will help to promote positive reading behaviors in the class during independent reading time and during their guided reading literacy centers.
Using the read along CDs while engaging in self-sustained reading or in literacy centers, will help foster a sense of security when reading.
The leveled activity box will provide readers of varying levels with opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of various reading strategies and concepts. Utilizing these materials consistently will contribute to raising my students' reading fluency, accuracy and comprehension. With these materials, my aim is for all of my students to reach and even exceed grade-level projected reading goals.
