We have a Freshman Academy in a consolidated school where we educate students from three feeder middle schools.
These students come from various home life situations.
They are from rural and suburban areas.
The kids need supplies, but due to regulations in WV, teachers are not allowed to require students to purchase their own. These regulations put a strain on teachers and the educational process. In English class, we need certain items to ensure learning is taking place and students can make the best of the educational opportunities and instruction that they are given.
My Project
My students need two novels, The Acorn People, Awakening and loose leaf paper to excel in class. I have so far gone through about 200 sheets of paper that I have bought myself for my students. In addition to this, I have torn out paper from several notebooks. This becomes difficult. Each year, we are only given $100 to purchase materials for our rooms. This $100 covers any classroom expenses. From dry erase markers to paper, pencils and tissues, it is a WV teacher's responsibility to provide those items. We can request the materials, but we cannot require students to have them.
Also, I'd like for my Honors English students to be exposed to other forms of literature before going on to their upper level and AP classes.
The novels in this project will help them gain exposure to different types of literature. We used to be able to buy materials and novels with extra money from our county. However, that money was re-allocated this year, and we are left with very little. These novels include fiction and non-fiction. "The Acorn People" and "The Awakening" are good, different novels for these kids to read and learn to appreciate. We will close read these as a group to help them understand how to read complex novels on their own. We also need a folding storage ottoman.
