Have you ever wondered what it would be like to reach the age of 12-16 before receiving any type of formal education? This is the reality for most of my students who live in a very rural community. Most were home-schooled until about 6 years ago. Home schooling for many of them meant doing chores mixed with some learning. Because families are large, sometimes with 15 or more children, resources were used on basic needs. Reading and owning their own books was not a luxury they could afford.
Since being able to attend public school, most of my students have developed a love of learning and a desire to help their younger siblings.
They recognize the value of learning to read at a young age. While we have an excellent school library, many students want books of their own. With your help, they will be able to fulfill that dream for our kindergartners, one child at a time. Please help them make those dreams come true.
Last year was the first year my sewing class made reading pillows for the kindergartners. It was a fabulous success. Many students expressed how excited they were to be able to make something for someone else. Just recently I received a picture from a first grader showing her with her reading pillow. Many parents still thank me for sending their child home with such a wonderful gift.
My school has been very generous to provide the fabric to make the pillows but obtaining books is a different story.
It would mean the world to us to have donors who value literacy help us complete this project. Not only will my student be improving their sewing skills, but they will continue to support literacy in the youngest grades.
Our two schools (elementary and high school) are populated by large families with limited financial resources. Being able to give back to the community, even if is is one kindergartner at at time, has made a big difference in the lives of the givers as wells as the recipients. We are so thankful for any assistance that can be provided to help complete this project.
