This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"I'm bored." "There is nothing to do." These are a few things that I heard from my own daughter when she was in elementary school during the summer. She was fortunate enough to have books at home and/or a way to the public library. I want to put books into the hands of my students for the summer.
I teach at a wonderful school that is full of great students.
We are a Title I school. We have a high percentage of students who are on the free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch program. Many of my students do not have books at home to read or transportation to the public library in order to be exposed to a variety of topics and genres. They get excited when they have the opportunity to visit our school library to check out books or read some of the books that I do have in my classroom. They love to share something they have read about or show you one of their spelling or vocabulary words that they have found in the book.
My Project
These books will be sent home with my students on the last day of school before summer break. These books will help my students keep their minds healthy by reading over the summer. They will strengthen their vocabulary, comprehension strategies, and many other skills by reading over the summer. When the students come back for their new school year, they will be able to take a test on the computer to check their comprehension on the books they read. As an incentive for reading the books over the summer, they will be able to visit the treasure box to choose a prize.
These books will give my students the opportunity to have a few books to read over the summer break to keep their minds healthy and comprehension skills in tact.
They will help keep the love of reading instilled in my students and ready to come back to school to check their comprehension of the books that they read.
