My students need both fiction and non-fiction books to improve their fluency and comprehension. We also need a place for students to sit for guiding reading groups.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
A typical day in our classroom will be filled with learning, movement and fun. Students may be sitting at their desks for a mini lesson and then sitting in the reading corner with a partner exploring books. I'd like all students to have mastered the core standards by June.
My students are a group of 2nd graders whose families come from all over the world.
They're cheerful, respectful, helpful and eager to learn. We work together to help make sure our students are self sufficient. We work hard every day, preparing strong leaders and learners for a more compassionate, equitable and sustainable world. We believe that we're all hear to take care of all students. We celebrate diversity and embrace everyone who walks through our doors. They're our students for life.
My Project
The Scholastic News magazines are crucial for students developing into readers. Instead of simply learning to read, students will be reading to learn. Students will be able to identify the main topic with multi-paragraph text and answer the 5 W questions. They'll also help them identify text features, which will help with their comprehension. I will use the books with the whole class, but mostly when teaching guided reading groups.
These donations will make a HUGE difference.
At this age, students are really developing a love for reading. When students are finished with the reading assignment, they will always have another resource to teach and entertain them. When we have the ability to read, it opens doors. Students will be able to use these skills across the curriculum. They'll go home and share their new knowledge with their families and improve the communication in homes.
