A few years ago my freshmen Latin students asked if I would take them to Italy for their senior trip...and I said yes. Over the years we've planned, saved, and we are nearly ready to go. In ten more months we travel.
Jessica, Nyah, and Abraao discuss the trip every day. They are so excited they even elected to take my senior year Latin class.
In order to make the trip feel closer, we have been reading books related to the trip.
I shall distribute the books in "clumps" so that a group of students gets one book, another group a second book, and so on. We'll rotate books over the school year. Then those students who really liked one particular book, will become the "experts" on that topic when we are touring Italy.
In Their Own Words
We have all studied Ancient Rome in our teacher's Latin class. To prepare us for more than just that time period, last summer our teacher make us read "The Agony and the Ecstasy," a book about Michelangelo. As we read we learned a lot about the Italian Renaissance. With these books we hope to learn more about the same time period.
After reading last year's book we asked our teacher what book would be next. He said, "What book do you want to read?" One of us said, "The Birth of Venus." The rest of us agreed. Then someone suggested, "What if we get different books and we share them?" Our teacher agreed provided those who read certain books explain what they learned when we are in Italy. We all agreed.
We want to become "docents" in particular areas of the Renaissance. While touring Italy some of us will "take the lead" in the group discussion of the day. We want to show out parents and our school that this trip isn't just a vacation - though we do hope to have lots of fun and even more good food.
