Most teachers think they have the best students, but I know I do! I work with three 5th grade classes. We are a city school facing the same economy challenges as other schools.
Our students are quite diverse, with several students in each grade level speaking other languages at home.
Our goal is to help increase community involvement and attendance.
My students are curious and motivated to learn more beyond our classroom. One of their favorite things to do is share about themselves and their culture.
My Project
Our students are learning about athletes and how they helped lead social changes. These books are various reading levels and match the topic. The books picked are inspiring stories about how anyone can make a difference, no matter their race, culture, economical standing, sex and more. The books are on high interest topics and the students will look forward to reading.
Anyone can make a positive impact on our society.
Students will be empowered to understand the change they can make in our world through this unit of study. Students will learn things about how one athlete was brave enough to be a black baseball player and open the world's eyes to allowing it. Students will learn that being a woman did not mean you couldn't compete against men. They will learn about athletes that raised awareness and protested against things like apartheid in South Africa.
While reading and discussing the books they will build reading and discussion skills. Not only that, they will see the impact they can have on society!
