This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every morning, 22 curious, hardworking first graders walk into my classroom ready to learn. They lead activities, take responsibility for the classroom, and help students who are struggling. They celebrate their "growing brains" and applaud the growth of others in the room.
My students do not lack the drive they need to be successful.
However, attending a Title I school in West Baltimore means that sometimes they do lack the materials and resources they need to truly thrive in the classroom. These passionate, excitable students deserve a high-quality education. Please help us provide this for them.
My Project
My students are curious first graders who are excited to learn as much as they can about the world around them. However, many of my students have not yet been exposed to many experiences outside of their home and the classroom. Their key to learning about their world lies in rich, engaging texts.
When we read a story that truly engages my students, you can feel the excitement in the air.
It is through stories like The Other Side that they are able to grasp the concept of segregation. We read The Day the Crayons Quit to explore the concept of peaceful protests as well as to identify and discuss different emotions. Martin's Big Words explains why Dr. King is influential in ways they can understand. When it is time to learn the tricky concept of subtraction, I pull out Elevator Magic, a relatable story about a child who pushes the button in the elevator and subtracts how many floors to go until he reaches the bottom. These books are varied in content and topic, but the magical reactions from my students are the same with every text.
The books I have requested will support my students' growth in our reading, social studies, and math units. I have included texts that we have borrowed from the library in years past and that they have responded to positively.
I have seen the strong, lasting impact that a wonderful book can have. In my classroom, I strive to foster the growth of curious individuals and lifelong readers. I believe that the addition of these texts would help turn my students into both.
