I have an amazing group of students that qualify as needing special education services. My students come from many different backgrounds and they all face unique challenges. Not only do my students face working with different learning abilities, many come from single-parent households, have low socio-economic status, and are English language learners.
My students are very often 2 to 3 levels behind their classroom peers.
That means they have to work 2 to 3 times harder to keep up! Despite these challenges my students come to school every day excited to learn and grow.
I have great need to be able to fill the gaps between my students to help every one of them reach their potential. Giving my students access to different types of learning materials will help bridge the gap.
My Project
You can see the whole world in the pages of a book. That is precisely what reading is: a doorway that allows us to discover all of the things the world has to offer. The possibilities that come with opening that door are endless, from joining the adventures of princesses and villains to learning facts about the three-horned chameleon. However, for a student struggling with a reading disability, it is as if that door to the world has been shut tight and locked.
I want to give my students the keys to the whole world.
I want to throw that door open and allow them to see how much fun reading can be. My students need books at their level that are engaging and fun. The First Little Readers complete library will give my students daily books to read at their level. We will use them to build their fluency and confidence. They need the variety that will keep them wanting to keep trying. They are also in need of engaging activities that will strengthen those important phonics and phonemic awareness abilities. The word sliders, game show, and phonemic awareness skills center will be used to strengthen and reinforce their reading skills. We will use them alongside our new library every day to help on the journey to becoming readers. I hope to create a literacy time that they will all look forward to and that will keep them excited about being readers.
